Hello! Somehow March 2018 has already arrived! So here’s my quick, slightly belated, look back at last year…
It was great to embark on research into the musical traditions of Cleveland. I was privileged to receive the Ewan MacColl Memorial Award and loved visiting archives and museums across the country to find new resources, repertoire and inspiration! I recorded some of the tunes on an EP and am looking forward to continuing this project.
Another highlight at the end of the year was an amazing visit to Xiamen University in China. Along with some fellow postgraduate music students from Newcastle University, it was so fantastic to meet music students in Xiamen, perform at their ‘Newcastle University Day’ and exchange music with the students there.
2017 was also full of some great gigs! Starting off the new year with a live session on BBC Radio 3 with Monster Ceilidh Band on New Year’s Eve Eve, then summer festivals and ceilidh fun too! The Rachel Hamer Band also released a debut album, I played in some festive Holly and Ivy Roadshow concerts, weddings and lots of tune-writing.
It was brilliant to teach at Folkworks Junior Summer School in July, as well as lots of wonderful pupils and workshops throughout the year.
So… looking forward to more exciting music-making in 2018!
